Psalm 3:1-8
Lord, how they have increased who trouble me! Many are they who rise up against me, Many are they who say of me, There is no help for him in God. But You, O Lord, are a shield for me My glory and the One who lifts up my head. I cried to the Lord with my voice, and he heard me from His holy hill. I lay down and slept, I awoke, for the Lord sustained me. I will NOT be afraid of ten thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around. Arise O Lord; Save me O my God! For You have struck all my enemies on the cheekbone; You have broken the teeth of the ungodly. Salvation belongs to the Lord. Your blessing is upon Your people.
David wrote this while being persecuted and pursued by his own son and his enemies. David is acknowledging the fact that the only one that can help him is God. He refers to Him as a shield. This reminds me of the verses in the New Testament about putting on the armour of God. David cried out in prayer to God and was heard. David realizes all that God has done for him and the people of Israel. David was sustained by the Lord. He was kept safe from those that wanted to harm him.
These verses speak to me in that I can cry out to God when I am in need. When I feel the enemies closing in on me or problems that are difficult--I can depend on God to sustain me through it all. God is my shield even when I am not aware of it. It would be easy to despair and give up. God gives us the strength to stand tall.
