Things to Consider in Bible Interpretation

  CONTEXT   – How does this verse fit with the verses before and after, and the whole chapter? LITERARY STYLE  – What kind of writing is this? Is it poetry, history, a letter, law, prophecy, etc.? GRAMMAR   – What does the subject and verb of the sentence indicate is the writer’s main point? Note figures of speech, etc. PARALLEL PASSAGES  – The Bible is its own best interpreter, so compare what the rest of scripture says on the subject. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND  – When, where and why was this written? What was going on at the time in history? What was the writer saying to people in his day and time? TRANSLATION   – Compare translations, to discern the best English word or phrase. SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT  – What has the Holy Spirit told you here, as you read and prayed over it? CHURCH TRADITION  – How have Christians around the world and throughout history interpreted this? Share this:

Jesus Fulfilled Prophecy

  “IN WHAT WAYS DID JESUS FULFILL PROPHECIES?” “How do we know that Jesus the Nazarene is the fulfillment of the numerous Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah? “ “Couldn’t it just been a coincidence?” To answer this, let’s consider a sampling of prophecies Jesus fulfilled. 1.) VIRGIN BIRTH: Through the prophet Isaiah, God foretold (Isaiah 7:14) that a virgin would give birth to a son who will be called Immanuel, meaning “God is with us” (Matthew 1:23). Jesus was born to a virgin (Luke 1:34-35) 2.) NAZARETH: The Gospel writer Matthew recognized that by being a citizen of Nazareth, Jesus fulfilled and Old Testament prophecy that Messiah would hail from that place ( Isaiah 9:1-2) (Matthew 2:22-23) (Matthew 4:15) 3.) MASSACRE OF INNOCENTS: When king Herod killed the male toddlers of Bethlehem in a quest to kill the young Jesus , this fulfilled something Jeremiah prophesied. ( Jeremiah 31:15) (Matthew 2:16-18) 4.) JEWS AND GENTILES: Jesus’ mission shocked the Jews because it made room
