Psalm 17: 10- 15

They have closed up their fat hearts; with their mouths they speak proudly. They have now surrounded us in our steps; They have set their eyes, crouching down to the earth, as a lion is eager to tear his prey, and like a young lion lurking in secret places. Arise, O Lord. Confront him, cast him down; deliver my life from the wicked with Your sword, with Your hand from men, O Lord, from men of the world who have their portion in this life, and whose belly You fill with Your hidden treasure. They are satisfied with children, and leave the rest of their possession for thier babes. As for me, I will see Your face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake in Your likeness.

'Fat hearts' refers to the luxuries that men seek. David writes that they are proud and vain in their possessions. Those that are seeking to kill him are like predators lying in wait. David asks that God strike these proud, vain men down. They have much to leave their children ( an inheritance) . These men are materialistic and think of worldly goods more than God. David ends this psalm stating that he will see God because he is a good man and wants to be like God. He wants to live a godly life.

This passage tells me that the vain, proud materialistic people have been with us for thousands of years. This is not a new phenomenon. Being godly is a path well chosen and I should not worry about the fact that I do not have a lot of "things". I only need God. I need to trust more in Him.
