2016 7 Jun COMMENTS 0 Share Tweet Share by E-Mail Stephen Sanders THE PRAYER OF JABEZ 1 Chronicles 4:10 Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, "Oh, that you would bless me And enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, And keep me from harm So that I will be free from pain." And God granted his request.

Being in God's Favor

1. Walk with God intimately – like Enoch. Slide 1 of 10 Scripture says Enoch “walked with God” for 300 years ( Genesis 5:22-24 ). We don’t have any details of what Enoch did during his life, other than that he “walked with God.” Enoch and God must have had some great talks as they walked. Enoch must have done a lot of listening, too. And they must have gained a true intimacy because God longed for Enoch’s presence so much that He “took him” home to heaven rather than leaving Enoch to die a natural death. I imagine God thought Enoch, your father, Jared is going to live 962 years, your son, Methusaleh, will live even longer! I’m not waiting nearly that long to see you face to face. Get up here… now! Do you want to be someone whom God can’t wait to be with? Let your life be characterized by a meaningful walk – not a brisk, hurried run – with God. Take the time to get to know Him, to recognize His voice, to hear His heart through His Word, and perhaps even take long, uninterrup...

Proverbs 31 -- The Perfect Woman?

This past weekend my sermon in Proverbs focused on what Solomon has to say about  marriage . In talking to husbands and wives about marriage, I found myself spending some time in  Proverbs 31 . I walked into this passage of Scripture with a little bit of trepidation because over the years I have seen how many women find this passage to be overwhelming and intimidating. If you Google “I Hate the  Proverbs 31 Woman,” you will find many posts by women who grew frustrated by” the excellent wife” who had deep, godly character, cared for her husband and children with the utmost diligence, and contributed to the well-being of her household through entrepreneurship. Any time a passage of Scripture becomes a millstone around the neck of Jesus’ followers we have either misunderstood or misapplied it. Jesus said those who follow him would be free indeed, and that his load was easy and his burden light. He does not throw the onerous yoke of the Pharisees on his people, but instead...

Elijah and His Accomplishments

Image
His name means “The LORD is my God.” The message of his life matched his name. It still does today. Not only do we see evidence of this man threaded throughout portions of the Old Testament, but we also find mention of him sprinkled in the New Testament as well. His name? Elijah. So who was Elijah? What did he accomplish? As a person, what was he like? How did his faith intertwine with his everyday living? And how does he impact us?  Let’s take a look at fifteen attributes of Elijah and see how this man of faith encourages us in our own faith today. 1. Elijah was a Prophet Elijah’s message and the meaning of his name go together like a fresh glass of milk and warm cookies. He walked, talked, and encouraged others to believe that truly the Lord was God—just as his name purported. As a prophet he adamantly shared God’s message and warnings. Often, both came under fire. Sometimes, however, people turned from following false gods and found themselves deep in worsh...
